GTK - Geological Survey of Finland

GTK is national geological research centre operating under the Ministry of Employment and Economy. GTK is one of the most competent European service centres in applied earth sciences.

The person-years worked amounts to over 680 in various aspects of geology, environmental sciences, geophysics, geochemistry and IT technology, many of them with strong international background. GTK´s annual turnover totals 58 M€; the invoicing is over 10 M€. GTK´s services are based on methodologies and technical solutions developed and tested in house before being adapted to various projects. International references cover a wide spectrum of undertakings in about 40 countries of all continents. It provides consultancy services and basic geological information essential for assessment of raw materials, nature conservation, environmental studies, land use planning and for new applications. The geological earth resources of strategic and economic importance - such as precious an7,*;q=0.7 Keep-Alive: 115 Connls, groundwater, aggregates, dimensional stone and bioenergy sources - are in the core of GTK's research mission. GTK´s has e.g. following research Programmes: Energy, Baltic Seafloor, Environmental Impact, Groundwater, Natural resources Accounting (incl. LCA), Mineral Potential, Geoinformation and Minerals & Processing.

Relevant experience:

GTK is a member e.g. of EGS, ENeRG – European Network for Research in Geo-Energy and ETP-SMR High Level Group.

GTK has acquired international experience by carrying out joint development projects, expert advisory work for the United Nations, and joint research projects with other institutes and EU Programmes. GTK applies standardised Quality Assurance procedures, which will be tailored to the project needs where necessary. GTK has specialised Project Support Team, which is experienced in various administrative, financial and legal issues of project administration and knowledge dissemination services. In 2008, GTK had 86 jointly funded projects from which 20 were EU-funded. In the EU-projects, GTK acted as a coordinator in 11 of them. Over the years, GTK has participated in many EU -projects on a wide-range of different programs, e.g. Framework Program, European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and European Social Fund (ESF), EU territorial cooperation objective and Cooperation along the external borders of the EU, LIFE and LIFE+, CIP, eContentplus and ESPON.

Science and technology projects include e.g. advanced multidimensional geological modelling, GIS and spatial analysis as a tool for exploration, sustainable use of geological secondary materials of extractive and other industries, geological mapping, mineral exploration, mineral processing, nuclear waste disposal, environmental risk assessment, LCA and environmental studies and techniques for the extractive industries and project activities e.g. in energy supply and land use and construction.
