CO2GeoNet-BGS - British Geological Survey

The British Geological Survey (BGS) was established in 1835. It forms part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and is the United Kingdom’s national geological survey and one of the world’s major centres of geoscientific knowledge, expertise and excellence. In the field of underground CO2 storage, BGS is an acknowledged world leader - over the past two years we have carried out more than 40 CO2 storage projects with a current annual budget of over £1.4m.

BGS co-ordinated the ground-breaking Joule II project in the mid-1990s and since then has had a leading role in many key storage projects. These include: monitoring and numerical modelling of the injected CO2 at Sleipner; developing site monitoring programmes for a number of potential European storage sites; co-ordinator of the EU Network of Excellence CO2GeoNet; research into the CO2 storage potential of the UK sector of the Southern North Sea; development of a web-based site monitoring selection tool for the geological storage of CO2 for the IEAGHG Programme; review of monitoring technologies for CO2 storage to the DTI Cleaner Fossil Fuels Programme; studies of the geological storage potential of the UK and its continental shelf for both the UK DTI Cleaner Fossil Fuels Programme and also for a number of industrial clients and studies of the geological storage potential of India and China for a number of clients. BGS is currently co-ordinating all monitoring work in CO2ReMoVe, a very large EU FP6 Integrated project, and we are involved in a number of onsite monitoring activities, including surface and subsurface microbiological assessments.

BGS has also been strongly involved in developing the CO2 storage regulatory framework, and have provided high-level technical advice to a number of regulatory authorities in Australia and the UK. We supplied Lead Authors to the IPCC Special Report on Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage, the CO2 storage part of the IPCC Guidelines for Compiling National Greenhouse Gas Inventories and the CO2STORE Best Practice Manual for CO2 storage in saline aquifers. BGS are also involved in public perception and dissemination issues, participating in a socio-economic study and site selection for geological storage in the UK.
